Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge

Located on Gulf Coast in eastern Cameron Parish, Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge is one of the most biologically diverse wildlife areas in the nation.

It has the highest alligator nesting densities of any place in the United States. Around the world, most of what is known about alligators comes from the extensive wetlands research performed at this remarkable refuge.

Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge sits on the edge of the vast Mississippi Flyway and has historically wintered more than 400,000 waterfowl. Declines in the continental duck population have reduced this number, but it is still a large wintering locale.

Activities
  • Recreational fishing (redfish, speckled trout, black drum, and largemouth bass, among others), shrimping and crabbing (must purchase a Wild Louisiana Stamp or Louisiana Basic Fishing License before entering refuge)
  • Birding: ducks, geese, coots, numerous shore birds, wading birds and migrant neo-tropical passerines from Central and South America
  • Wildlife viewing: muskrat, rails, raccoon, mink, otter, opossum, white-tailed deer, nutria and more
  • Regulated trapping of furbearers whose uncontrolled population growth can threaten the marsh
