Lake Charles' 20-block Historic Charpentier District reflects the city's great 19th century timber boom heritage. "Charpentier," the French word for "carpenter," honors the many fine carpenters who created these elegant homes, one of the finest collections of Victorian architecture in the state. The Historic Charpentier District is on the National Register of Historic Places.
