Unique to South Louisiana, traditional Acadian homes are built of native cypress wood that is little affected by moisture and is insect resistant. Many Acadian buildings are raised on blocks to protect from flooding and termites as well as to offset summer heat. Front and rear doors are centered and each wall has one or two windows. The characteristic steep-pitched gable roof extends beyond the building frame to incorporate the porch as an open living area. Four corner posts support the extended roof.
